Becoming a Driving Instructor

Becoming a qualified driving instructor (ADI) means meeting strict standards set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. You must pass all three parts of the qualification process within 2 years and demonstrate not just driving ability, but professional teaching skill.

This is a structured, high-level qualification. Done properly, it leads to a long-term career or business.

The 3-Part ADI Qualification

Stage One

This is a professional-level assessment, far more rigorous than the standard learner test.

  • 100 Multiple choice questions (85% pass mark required)
  • Advanced road safety, pedagogy, and technical knowledge
  • High-standard hazard perception (57/75 pass mark)
  • Unlimited attempts allowed (unlike Parts 2 & 3)
Stage Two

Driving Ability Assessment

A 60-minute advanced driving test where you must demonstrate near-perfection.

  • Maximum of 6 minor faults allowed (learner limit is 15)
  • Expert vehicle control on motorways and high-speed roads
  • Precision maneuvers and independent driving via Sat-Nav
  • CRITICAL: Only 3 attempts allowed in total
Stage Three

Instructional Ability Test

The final and most challenging stage. You are assessed on your teaching methodology.

  • Conduct a 45-minute lesson with a real pupil
  • Assessed on lesson planning, risk management, and teaching
  • Must identify and correct pupil faults effectively
  • CRITICAL: Only 3 attempts allowed in total
